Doris Laverne Powers

Obituary

Doris Laverne Powers, age 91, of Aurora, Missouri, passed away at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 12, 2017, at the Aurora Nursing Center.  She was born August 16, 1926, in Aurora, Missouri, the daughter of Fenton and Orpha (Nobles) Dunning.

Laverne was a 1944 graduate of Aurora High School and a machinist for the Juvenile Shoe Factory in Aurora and Vaisey Bristol Shoe Factory in Marionville and sold Avon for over 30 years.  She was a member of the Beta Sigphi Chapter 8556 Sorority and of the Aurora First Baptist Church and attended Verona Baptist Church. 

On November 29, 1944, she married Joseph William Powers, in Columbus, Kansas.  He preceded her in death on March 7, 2012.

She is survived by her son, Micky Powers and his wife, Betty, of Aurora; one daughter, Sue Ann Baker and her husband, Joe, of Verona, Missouri; two sisters, Lorene (Tooter) McCullah of Aurora and Peggy Sue Newbold and her husband, Jim, of Springfield, Missouri; five grandchildren, Jimmy Powers, Robby Powers, Amy Jordan, Owen Baker and JoAnn Scott; 20 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Her parents, Fenton and Orpha, husband, Joe, sister, Louise Jaqua, and two brothers, Johnnie and Jimmie Dunning, preceded her in death.

A funeral service will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, September 18, 2017, at the Crafton-Cantrell Funeral Home in Aurora.  Burial will follow at the Maple Park Cemetery in Aurora. Visitation will be held from 3:00-5:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 17, 2017, in the funeral home chapel.
