Norbertine "Jean" Mais


Norbertine Eujeania “Jean” Mais, 88 of Aurora, MO, passed away on July 4, 2017.  She was born January 24, 1929, to Theresa Catherine Huber and Adolph August Lehman in Billings.  Jean married John “Bernard” Mais in Billings, MO on June 21, 1949. They shared 61 years raising nine children

Preceding her in death was her husband J.B. and their oldest son, John Mais, grandson Matthew Baker and sisters Helen Lange and Virginia Twilling.  She is survived by her remaining eight children, Patricia Baker ( Richard ) of Gainesville, VA, Regina Griesemer (Dr. Bernard Griesemer) of Springfield, Robert Mais (Rachel ) of Chesterfield, MO, Mary Seward (Paul ) of San Antonio, TX, Don Mais (Shirlene) of Springfield, Theresa Pettit (Scott ) of Aurora, Mike Mais (Tracy ) of Warsaw, MO, Mark Mais

(Cindy) of Battlefield, MO and daughter-in-law Jacquie Mais of Marionville.  She was blessed with 22 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren with more “greats” on the way.   Jean is also survived by her brother, Joe Lehman (Emma Leigh) her sister, Ann Stever, and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

In 7th grade she worked in Billings at The Mercantile and later at Andrew’s Drug Store making 50 cents and hour.  She walked a mile to school crossing between rail cars.  She was a graduate of Billings High School where she enjoyed playing the drums and violin in the band.  Jean worked as a dental assistant while going to Draughn’s College in Springfield.  After moving to Aurora, she was a bookkeeper for Seburn Motors.  She thoroughly enjoyed meeting people working as a cashier at Milgram’s where she later worked at Ramey’s for 27 years.  Her customers became like family to her.  In addition to raising her children, she was well known for growing blackberries and turkeys.  The “A-Mais-ing Recipes” cookbook containing family favorite recipes was published in tribute for Jean’s 85th birthday.  In addition to cooking, she handed down her skills of sewing and gardening.  She enjoyed telling the story behind her name.

She was a lifelong member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church of Aurora where she sang in the choir.  Jean was always willing to help others as noted by volunteering at the Marionville VFW Clothing Bank and was Pink Lady for Mercy Hospital.  She was a member of the Holy Trinity Altar Society and President of the Aurora Women’s VFW.

Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Friday, July 7, 2017, at the Crafton-Cantrell Funeral Home in Aurora.  Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 8, 2017, at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Aurora with burial following at the Mount Calvary Cemetery.  

In lieu of flowers, Jean requested memorial donations be made to the John B. Mais Jr. Scholarship Fund in care of the funeral home or mail to Community Foundation of the Ozarks, P. O. Box 8960, Springfield, MO  65801.

I remember meeting Jean when she lived next door to my Grandmother and playing with the all the kids..
I enjoyed her when she worked at Ramey's and she always visited when we would meet each other.
My thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time. It is hard to loose a loved one.
